If You Don’t Know Which Marketing Is Working, You’re Wasting Money.

“The man who doesn’t know which of his efforts are working is certain only of one thing: he’ll keep wasting money on the ones that aren’t.”— Tony Seymour, New Patient Hierarchy
How much did you spend on marketing last month? And how many new patients did each dollar generate?
If you can’t answer the second question with reasonable confidence, you’re operating blind. And operating blind in marketing is expensive — not just because money gets wasted on channels that don’t work, but because the money that could be going to channels that do work is going somewhere less effective instead.
1. The Most Expensive Assumption in Chiropractic Marketing
The most expensive assumption in chiropractic marketing is: “I think this is working.”
Think is not know. When you’re spending money based on think, you’re either funding a strategy that isn’t actually generating patients as well as you believe, or underfunding something that’s working better than you realize.
The Marketing Review Form in New Patient Hierarchy is designed to replace “I think” with “I know.”
2. The Minimum Viable Tracking System
You don’t need enterprise-level analytics. You need a minimum viable tracking system that answers: where are my new patients coming from?
Ask every new patient: “How did you hear about us?” Record the answer every time. Review the data monthly.
Track Google Ads calls separately from organic calls with a call tracking number.
Check Google Analytics monthly for which pages drive the most contact form submissions and calls.
Count referrals by source. Which patients refer most? What prompted those referrals?
This takes about 30 minutes a month. It tells you where your patients are coming from. And it allows you to make the single most important marketing decision available: reallocate budget from what isn’t working to what is.
3. What to Do With What You Find
What’s working: Amplify it. More budget, more attention, more optimization.
What’s not working: Diagnose before cutting. Is it the audience? The message? The platform? The offer? Give it one round of thoughtful adjustments before cutting.
What’s unknown: Make it known. Add tracking before continuing to fund it.
4. The Cost of Not Knowing
A practice spending $1,500 per month across four channels — unable to attribute patients to channels — is almost certainly funding at least one channel generating little or nothing. If $400 per month goes to a channel producing no patients, that’s $4,800 per year wasted. More importantly, that’s $4,800 not going to the channels that do work.
5. Diagnose Before You Prescribe
You wouldn’t adjust a patient without examining their spine first. Marketing deserves the same discipline. Diagnose before you invest. Know before you spend. Measure before you assume.

FAQs
1. What is the simplest way to track which chiropractic marketing is working?
Ask every new patient how they found you and record the answer consistently for 90 days. Two or three channels will account for the majority of patients. That data alone is sufficient to make dramatically better marketing investment decisions.
2. How do I know if my chiropractic Google Ads are generating patients?
Use a dedicated call tracking number for your Google Ads campaigns that’s different from your organic number. This separates paid and organic calls, showing you exactly how many patients your ad spend is generating.
3. What should I do when I find a chiropractic marketing channel that isn’t working?
Diagnose before cutting. Ask: is the problem the audience, the message, the creative, the platform, or the offer? Make one targeted adjustment and retest. If adjusted results are still poor, cut without guilt and reallocate the budget.
